How do you know if your blu-ray player is outputting a 1080p signal?

Does hdmi connection with a 1080p tv assure that or is there some setting in the players setup? I have the Panasonic 55.

You should be able to see what signal is coming from the player by looking at your display/TV info. It should specify what signal it is receiving, at least mine does. No, HDMI connection does not always presume a default 1080p signal. :) If you find that the TV isn't receiving 1080p, you should be able to change that in the BD players setup menu. I would imagine that it's default setting is 1080p though since it's a blu-ray machine, maybe someone who has more first-hand experience with that player can confirm. :)

I believe that if you set the HDMI resolution to "auto" the player will send the most suitable signal to your display. All resolutions will have an *asterisk* to indicate the incoming signal.

The 55 default setting for HDMI resolution is AUTO. As suggested, check the TV what signal it is getting. You can always change the default and force it to 1080p if needed.
