How do you know if there is a problem with the subwoofer?

I recently upgarded from the Athena Micra 6 system to the Athena WS60 (l/r/c), WS15 surrounds (wall mounted WAF approved) and a Rocket ULW10. I am still within the 30 day return period on the Rocket and am trying to decide whether there is a problem with it.

Here is the situation. The subwoofer seems to have a very hard to describe "low crackling" noise (I know that it is supposed to rumble), but it seems to happen when there is nothing apparent that requires it, and it is audible by itself - it is almost a static sound. If anything I think the sound from the Yamaha HTR5850 is probably set low because when I do the test tones from the Yamaha the audible volume from the subwoofer is clearly less than from the speakers. I have not purchased a sound meter and am only doing this by ear. I have scheduled for an HAA tech to do a basic calibration this weekend, but my concern is if there is a problem with the subwoofer that his visit will have to be repeated at additional cost. I do not want to over react, as this might all be resolved by the tech, but if there is a problem I am sure that AV123 will replace the unit, and it would be nice to get everything done in one visit.

Any suggestions for simple (actually idiot, newby level) tests that I can do to determine whether to call and say I have a problem? I have new Impact Acoustics cables being delivered today to see if that helps.

Thanks.

Call AV123 right away and run the situation by them. If you are still not satisfied, you can return it and reschedule the calibration guy. I suspect you will be able to work things out to your satisfaction with AV123 however.

Bring the sub to a friend's house and hook it up. That'll determine if it's the sub or not.
