How do you guys organize your music & movies?

After many years collecting CDs, LPs, & DVDs, I decided I had to have a way organize this mess. I tried making Excel spreadsheets, but the sheer volume of data entry was too daunting. I found a set of applications called Readerware that let you scan each item with a bar-code scanner or drag-and-drop from various websites to populate the lists. Anyone else out there find a program that works as well?

I use MediaMonkey to organize the Song titles/genre etc. It's quite fast when searching for songs, faster than WMP and Itunes.

I designed the schema for a music database that allows me to find anything and I use that. Currently using MS Access because I have it but the schema will work for any SQL-92 compliant database.

Writing my own application to make data entry easy has been on my 'todo list' for a very long time. The problem is that doing it right turns it into work and I get enough of that during the week. So...I enter the data manually and if you know anything about databases you know that is extremely tedious because I have to look up the keys from each table to keep the relationships correct.

Scanning barcodes would be nice but just doesn't work when you have a lot of music that is long out of print, as I do.

I got inspired a few years ago and put all of my CDs (that are in wooden organizers) into alphabetical order and then have kept them that way. I used to have an up-to-date list on the computer, but I lost interest in keeping that current after I pulled them all into iTunes and now I let it do it. My DVDs also started out in alphabetical order, but that didn't last. I do have a list of those on my computer, though. I just use Excel or Word. I don't categorize them in the lists, though.

I don't really have much organization for my dvds. I try to keep it all in order by genre but that doesn't last too long. Music I have on my computer and it goes Genre>Artist>Album>Song. Nothing as fancy as most of the other people here.
