New tv coming today WOOHOO!! panny tcp60st50.

how do I wire everything up using hdmi cables.I thought I read I can use 1 cable from tv to receiver to bluray,but Im not sure?

My components are:
TV,cable box,bluray,New yamaha a/v receiver. Surround sound speakers
If I wire through the receiver can I listen to the tv without having the receiver on?
any help with inputs and outputs on each component would be great
THANKS!!

tv input -> avr output
bluray output -> avr input (1)
cable box -> avr input (2)

I have my system hooked up this way. Bluray then becomes input 1 for your AVR and cable is input 2. (the numbers aren't important, any will do)

(My avr actually has suggested inputs (not that it matters) for the input devices. The suggested inputs are there because of default icons in the network interface and can be changed if needed.)

To have the tv sound on without the receiver on I would have to run another cable (cable box -> tv). Your receiver might be different. That being said I think that having surround sound for television watching is a very good thing. Alot of content is broadcast in surround sound

My cable box only has 1 hdmi port.How does that work if I need to run 2 cables from the box?(I really dont need surround sound for watching the news and basic programs)

If the Yamaha receiver is relatively new (no model number was given), it likely supports ARC (audio return channel) and no additional cables are required to watch TV without the receiver being on.

You'll have to read the manual to see how to set that up.

ARC only works if you have the sources plugged strait into the TV, however all recent (and somewhat recent) yamaha receivers have "hdmi pass through" which will put the signal from whatever HDMI source you were using last strait through to the tv while the receiver is off.
