How do I stop the Humming??

I've recently installed a dimmer switch in the living room where my stereo/home theatre system is set up, but am now getting quite significant humming from all my speakers. The sound of the humming increases as I turn down the lights! Any suggestions for how I might be able to get rid of this??

Now to fix your problem.

Sounds like a ground loop. Have an electrician check the wires. Did the switch you installed have connections for two wires or three?

exactly the same.
i tried out everything with my set of speakers. but no respite.
its so irritating.

The SCRs in those dimmers throw out a lot of RFI. Not much you can do AFAIKT.

Get rid of the dimmer. There are solid state dimmers out there that don't throw off any RFI/EMI.

RFI - Rado Frequency Interference, s/b self explanatory

EMI - Electro Magnetic Interference - similar to RFI.
