How do I setup Zone 2???

I have a Yamaha 5790 and am trying to figure out how to make Zone 2 work. I have two speakers out on my back deck that are connected to Zone 2 on the reciever. In looking in the owner's manual it says I need to have a separate amp and speakers in the second zone in order for the system to work....is that true? Do I really need a separate amp to make this setup work? I guess I've been under the impression that I could run both zone 1 and 2 straight from the reciever without needing a separate amp. Anyone have any input? Also...I'm having trouble figuring out how to select a different source for zone 1 than zone 2...again, back to the owner's manual, it says I need to setup the sources I intended to use in zone 2. Does that mean that I have to hook a separate CD player up to the receiver if I want to listen to CDs out on the back deck? Again, I guess I was under the impression that I would simply be able to use the internal tuner in the receiver and the existing CD player that's connected to the receiver to listen to music on the back deck (using zone 2) while the kids are watching TV in the family room (using zone 1).

Color me confused!!

Thanks.
Mike

On my Denon there's a switch on the remote control for the multizone. When turned on, all the input selectors on the remote control are for the multizone.

Yes, you need a separate integrated amplifier for the multizone. You connect your Yamaha to the integrated amp with phono leads. Connect speakers to the integrated amp. Select what source you want to listen to on the Yamaha, eg. TV for the Yamaha and on the multizone, the CD player (also connected to the Yamaha).

No you do not need a seperate amp. I checked Yamaha site fot the 5790 and it says presense channels are assignable to zone 2. This model is similar to my RX-V1500 so I will go through how I setup my zone 2. You will indeed be able to have sources going in both rooms, using just your 5790. If you have a 7.1 setup in your main room you will temorarily loose the two rear channels. By this I mean if you want your patio at same time as main room you will have 5.1 in main and 2 channels to patio. If you want just your main room you can have the 7.1 back if you want. Im going to go over the steps I took and then repost for you. Check Zone2/Zone3 section near back of manual for info.

HSM Where are your steps

HSM so far you have come closer to answering my questions about zones 2 and 3. But i saw no steps. Whould you be so kind as to go over them. I'm using a V2500 and I'm sure the steps should be the same or close.

I'll download the manuals to see if I can be of some assistance. Have patience I'm physically handicapped.

If the multizone can hijack those amps, WOW!!

Also, don't forget, usually the source used for Zone 2 has to be analog. If you have your CD/DVD player connected using the digital connection, you'll also need to use the analog connection to make it work. Plus, the FM/AM tuner should work also. You might want to use an FM station to get it working, then cut over to the CD/DVD player a bit later with the analog connections.

Best of luck. :)

Color me confused too

If you want to run pure 7.1 AND ZONE 2/3, you will need separate amplification for those zones. To run 7.1 and/or ZONE 2, you can use the internal channels of the rear/presence, I THINK.  You may only get 5.1 and ZONE 2. Zone 3 requires separate amplification either way. Most other brands work this way. I couldn’t find anything in the manuals to help clear this up. :( I also want to make sure you are connecting to the zone2/presence terminals in the bottom right corner.

Reference manual as (5790/2500)

T2T is correct, see note (pg 68/78)

The setup procedures for these two units are essentially the same. Don’t take all of this as gospel but these are the steps I would take. Hopefully, you are familiar enough with the setup menus to make this easier.

Pg 53/57 - Select PRch/Presence

Pg 58/63 - Output Vol=Var, Zone2 Amp=On/ Zone2 Amp=Internal, Zone 2/3 Volume=Variable

Unfortunately, the remotes do not come enabled for zone use.

Pg 69/79 - / Use code 2001

This is a quick guide. I hope it helps. Hopefully, other Yammy users can help.
