How do I know where to set the lip sync setting on my receiver?

I have a Sony 50" Grand Wega projection LCD. Sometime the audio and video look a little "off". Other times I can't notice. How do know the correct settings? I also have a Sony DVD player and a HK 335. 90% of what I watch is progressive scan DVDs.

AV Sync Delay for HK AVR335

If you turn to page 16 of your manual, it describes the process for adjusting the sync delay.

If you do not have a manual, HK is proud to provide you one on their website.

Start around 35msec and work your way up. 100 to 110msec delay would be the upper limit, IMO.

The setting is correct when the sound matches the picture. If there were one setting that I or anyone else could guarantee would work right in all cases, they would have it preset that way and the idea of having an adjustment would never come up. Try looking at DVDs with close-ups of people talking when you make your adjustments.

Please note, however, that you may need to readjust for particular DVDs, as the mastering could be off in some cases, and for these, you will need to readjust it if you want the sound and picture to match.
