How do I hook up an audio analyzer?

I am in the last stage of assembling my HT, so I have invested in a "real" audio spectrum analyzer. Problem is I've never done any hardcore technical audio/acoustic tweaking before. I bought a Behringer ECM 8000 measurement microphone and a Phantom III power supply. I need to patch the microphone to my laptop... the mic is XLR connection and the laptop is a 3.5mm (1/8") input jack.

I bought the wrong cable and looking at the new power supply I see I actually need 2 cables. I honestly don't know how critical the mic cable and laptop connection will be for accurate frequency measurements.

Are high end XLR cables necessary for accurately feeding the signal to my laptop?

Will an XLR to 3.5mm adapter intruduce distortion into my readings?

How short should I keep my cables? (I only "need" 8' of cable for the work)

Does it matter if the transformer is located closer to the mic stand, or nearer the laptop?

Thanks... Hermit
