toslink and digital coax serve the same purpose.

Yare asking a pretty vague question but you seem to have the correct cables.

You may want to recheck your inputs and outputs with those in the manuals to see that they are correct. hint: Rely mostly on the manual for the receiver.

Likewise, recheck those manuals for instructions on how to set everything up. This is a little more complex than a clock radio..

I have my tv connected to Direct tv receiver through HDMI.
Direct tv rca cables hooked up to A/V receiver.
I keep my TV volume on zero so I can get surround sound.
But how do I get a digital connection in which my A/V receiver will recognize it instaed of sitting in PRO-LOGIC setting?

Sounds good.

By properly attaching either that "digital coax" or "toslink cable from the DVD player (and possibly the cable box) to the correct input receiver. You may have to "tell" the receiver what input to use. Again, check your manuals for how to set everything up!!!

This is correct. Mute the TV and use the receiver to adjust the volume. Add the digital optical or coax cable as suggested above and you should be ready for surround sound. While DVDs will have a 5.1 Dolby or DTS track, most cable channels will be 2 channel audio. HD movie channels are more likely to include a Dolby digital audio feed.

Try reading your owners manuals. You'll be amazed what you'll find in there. After that, if you have a more specific question, I'd be glad to help.
