I have an old Denon 2802 and I want to hook it up so that I can hear all six channels. Do I need to hook up a seperate amp to hear the 6th speaker, or can I even get it at all?

Nope, it has all the amp sections to do 6.1 sound. I assume you already have a 5.1 setup. All you need to do is connect the 6th speaker to the "surround back" speaker posts. Done and done.

hmmmm....that's what I did and there isn't any sound coming out of that speaker. Can I only hear the 6th channel on certain movies?

Most multi-channel sources are encoded in 5.1, not 6.1, so yes, only certain movies would work. That said, I believe you can make your Denon process the 5.1 signal and create a 6th channel that it will send to the rear speaker. I don't know the 2802 at all though, so I couldn't begin to tell you how to navigate the menus and select the correct setting.

If you want to hear 6.1 from all sources, you can change the sound mode by turning the small knob that is below the volume control. Turn it untill your unit says something like " Dolby Prologic IIx" or "DTS NEO:6". Both of these will activate the surround sound during 2 channel sources.

Here's the specs.
AVR-2802
Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II & DTS ES Discrete 6.1 A/V Receiver • Dolby Pro Logic II decoding with Cinema and Music Modes • DTS Extended Surround Discrete 6.1 decoding • DTS Extended Surround Matrix 6.1 decoding • DTS Neo:6 Cinema & Music Surround decoding • Dolby Digital decoding, including Matrix 6.1 decoding • 24 bit DSP processor • 6 Channels equal power amplifier section • 90 watts per channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, <.05%THD) • 135 watts per channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, <.7%THD)

He can engage matrix 6.1, Neo 6, or PLII. I recommend Neo 6 because it has the least compression, and uses the full frequency range of 20-20,000Hz
