How do I get speaker wire to stick to the ceiling?

Hi everyone,

Well, I've finally installed my HT: 6.1 surround sound, and oh BOY am I happy! With one minor exception, and I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction.

I've got the rear centre speaker mounted on my back wall, and I want to run the 14 guage speaker wire up the wall (it's a short distance), then along the ceiling, make a couple right angle turns on the ceiling, around a beam, then come back down on an outside wall. I've tried that white-coloured wide tape, and it all fell down overnight. I've tried the velcro strips, and the wire itself fell down within a few hours. The velcro strips stuck just fine to the ceiling, of course! (Grrr!)

My ceiling is the typical (?) white ceiling that has all those little white pebbly thingies all over it. The length my speaker wire would have to travel on the ceiling is about six feet. Any ideas what I should use to keep it up there?

thanks so much, and cheers,

Industrial staples. The kind they use to attach house wraps with.

Yeah, I thought of that. I don't want to ruin my ceiling, but if no other options present themselves, I may have to go with the staples. Thanks for the suggestion. Anybody have other ideas?

Use 1/2" or 1 inch depending on the wire thickness, double-sided tape first across the path of wire on the ceiling, then remove the other side protective paper, stick wire onto it and then cover-up the wire with the single sided tape, just like a sandwich, with the wire being the filling inside. Double sided tapes have high holding strength and this would also conceal the wire inbetween the two tapes, although it is white in colour and might not give you the same effect as on the ceiling.

Hope this helps!!!!

The only proper way, IMO, is to do the job right. You will need a "fish" cable (from Home Depot), a drill with the appropriate saw bits and several drywall repair kits. Don't forget the paint you'll need as well. Drill your holes and "fish" the wire up the wall and over the ceiling then down the other side. I know you probably already thought of this but just didn't want to do the work, but there is no subsitute for invisible cables. The WAF is very high and you will get a lot of "feel good" for a job well done.

Would that I could do it that way. Unfortunately, I live in an apartment building, and there simply is no way for me to get into the ceilings. Besides, when my girlfriend saw the speaker wire on the ceiling with two-sided tape, she commented, "And see -- it's out of the way, and looks kinda pretty. Not bad. Not bad at all." I think I lucked out. :)
