How close are we to WWIII?

Iran has, apparently, placed mines farther from shore- goes with their thinking that they can harass vessels that are on international water.
Do have any references for that? The only reports I've seen indicate that they are laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz?

Iran is laying mines in the Straights of Hormuz. There was video of it on the BBC. Now, the Straights are national waters of Iran and Oman. However there is a UN convention that all shipping has to have free passage through the Straights and Iran are in contravention of this convention. A lot of their mine layers have been blown out of the water. I have seen video of that.

Yes, I get all that. But, @highfigh stated that they were laying mines further from shore, although I see no indication of that.

And yes, while Iran is violating international laws by laying these mines, it's just one example of a multitude of international laws being violated during this conflict, by both sides.

Good place to have US mine sweepers:

Trump pulled mine-sweepers from Middle East before Iran war

Super planning.
Meanwhile, Iran is getting their own tankers through the strait. It is quite clear that there was abysmally poor planning prior to starting this war.

Are there not blockades or sanctions in place and stop this?
Or, bomb the daylights out of their oil and gas terminals? Why not?

Oh, they are bombing the crap out of oil and gas production and distribution, so I don't know how many more tankerloads will be available. As for the ships that have left, I don't know why they have not been intercepted.

Iran has set ablaze two oil tankers, off Iraq, and not in the Straights of Hormuz. They are really ablaze and will be a total loss. They were set in fire by remote speed boats loaded with explosives.

Meanwhile oil is just under $100 per barrel. I don't think the releases of oil from the strategic reserve will have much impact on this.

Despite thinking that Iran is running out of weapons, they are stepping up there bombardments, which are the most intense of the war.

All this goes to reinforce the dictum that you can't fight a war without boots on the ground.

This could well become a classic Cluster, "you know what."

Not surprising since the "Commander in Chief" is a demented idiot. But we will all pay the price.

I have to think the US's satellite network has a way to record movement of Iranian ships over some period of time- if not, I have to wonder why not? It doesn't need to be continuous but if the mine laying ships use only a few ports, it might be possible to see where they stopped to lay the mines, assuming they aren't the type that drift (and are prohibited).

Iran's Supreme Leader just announced his first statement saying they will close the straights of Hormuz. In talking with my 8th grade grandson last night he asked me why Trump hadn't planned properly for that ?

I've been stating this all along.

Another well planned clusterfcuk by the Republican leadership. I wonder if Trump is going to pull out and leave the Israeli s on their own as Trump's popularity keeps plummeting. Another well planned orchestration by the republican leadership to raise inflation through out the world economy as the tarrifs weren't enough.

An Iranian news anchor read what was supposedly his speech and he never showed up in person since the initial attack. No one knows for sure if he wrote that, or the state of his health. He lost most of his family including his wife and you can be sure that he's going to be hell bent on revenge.

One can only hope he is dead as well, regardless, hopefully their military revenge has been mostly neutralized. I see cyber attacks have begun though

I saw quite a few sound bites of Trump's off the cuff interviews this morning and he sounded absolutely doolally and far gone. Congress needs to intervene ASAP. The man is dangerously demented.

The ships, when they don't want people to know where and who they are, turn off their AIS. It is illegal, but many are doing it now. It is very hard to accurately identify a ships name and registration from a satellite. You can't really attack a ship if you can't be sure of its identity, ownership and country in which it is flagged.
This sounds an easy problem, but it is far from it.

I know about AIS and the practice of turning it off, but with our surveillance flights, it's easy enough to see who's where. We have drones, too- rules cover their being shot down. We also have ships with incredibly good optical capabilities, so they can be used to identify shipping. I meant that our satellites can be used for detecting their position- identity can be done from a closer location.
