Hi All,

My friend wants to buy a HT system for his room (14 feet x 12 feet). He checked few speakers and decided to go ahead with paradigm monitor se package. He is taking 3000f towers and 2000c center. It says its input is 100watts max and these speakers are suitable for a AV receiver with output 130 watts max.

1. how can we decide if this peak output of a speaker is too much for this room
2.how to decide which subwoofer ouput is suitable for this room

You will never use all of an amps wattage, 130ch is 2 channels driven probably, more speakers less wattage per channel.
which avr ?
You’d need a massive room for that to run out of Power ... like huge a small theater size probably fine for any room size .
your ears will tap out before the avr usually.
I've only damaged a speaker from giving it too low of bass input that’s it .
Two sub outputwill both be the same exactly , no difference.
Enjoy !! My speakers aren’t quite as expensive , low end Klipch icons . Will work for a while probably.

I'm assuming you mean the Paradigm SE 3000F?
It specs 88 dB sensitivity which is pretty good and shouldn't require a ton of power to play plenty loud if he wants. As far as "too much" goes, I don't think so. I don't think "peak output" is something he'll be seeing very often unless he likes it super loud. I think those speakers and receiver will work fine.

As far as subs, going with dual subs is always better than one for more even coverage. You don't need monsters in that room unless it's open to other spaces. A pair (or well placed single) of ported 12" should be able to handle it. That said, get the best you can. Subs are critical for home theater and I use mine with music as well. I can tell something is missing without them. You don't want to skimp on subwoofage. Good, clean bass is always underestimated. I didn't see a budget mentioned? Has he bought the speakers yet? Have you guys considered other brands? How about a budget for the whole kit n kaboodle (speakers, receiver, subs, etc)?

Keep in mind the speaker wattage rating is more a limit than anything useful. Usually you're only using a handful of watts at normal listening levels and thoughtful use of the volume knob is easy to set limits with :). Try using an spl calculator to see the relationship between distance, speaker sensitivity and power required. http://myhometheater.homestead.com/splcalculator.html

Makes sense..thanks a lot for these inputs...he has a budget..hence he wanted to consider those speakers...he might go ahead with either velodyne 10inch or svs pb 1000....dual may not fit his budget...but will definetly consider your recommendation....

I think a PB1000 is a good little sub and will offer you decent bass in a small room like that. Of course a pair of them would be even better, but we all have spending restraints.

Um, did you mean to give me a thumbs down for my last post? I'm assuming you did what I always do and fat fingered it...
