how can I use these subs temporarily?

I have 2 premier acoustic 10inch subs that were for a car in a car box. I have all my other speakers but havent bought a real sub yet (saving $$). I was thinking of connecting it and tossing it behind the couch.

could I use these to give me a little bass in the meantime? They dont have a amp or RCA connections obviously so I can only hook them with speaker wire.

I dont want to use my front hookups to power them when I have good towers that need those. If I hook them to the rear outs then it only gives sound of course. I have a pioneer elite 21- 7.1 amp.

Any ideas? or is it not worth the hassle or doing?

Nothing comes to mind for me in terms of setting up a sub without an amp with just the VSX-21. Do you have an older receiver? If so, you could use it to power the sub box (I did something similar here) - assuming that the impedance of the box isn't so low as to put the receiver into protection mode because of the current draw.

I do have a older receiver in the closet. Why how would I hook that up?

I might just have to smoke the credit card and get my sub and sell the car box to a buddy.

To use an older receiver, you'd connect the subwoofer output from the VSX-21 to an RCA y-adapter cable, then to both the left and right RCA inputs on one of the inputs on the older receiver (e.g. the "DVD" input).

The older receiver then acts like an amp with a volume control, so you would use the volume control on the receiver to level match the sub box to the rest of the speakers. When I did it, I had to turn the volume on my older receiver way up - but that will depend on your receiver and the sub box.

EDIT: Oops, forgot to mention that the sub box needs to be connected to the front left/right speaker outputs on the older receiver (thanks, Mark!), and the older receiver needs to be put into "Stereo" mode.

Those subs need an amplifier to power them.

You would need to connect the sub output to a high level (aux) input on your older receiver and then connect that receiver's speaker outputs to the subwoofers in question.
