how can I find out how much equipment is worth?

Thinking of buying some stuff but I have no idea what I should be paying for it. Is there a price guide on the net, or books, for used equipment? Kinda like a consumer reports thing?

Well there are several audio sites that feature used equipment. My favorite is AudiogoN and they have a Blue Book service that will tell you the approximate resale value of specific equipment. It is a fun place to browse if you are so inclined.

You have to pay to use the Blue Book service on A'gon though. If I'm looking at something used, I always check AudiogoN, EBay, and sometimes Amazon as a quick reference to compare current prices, if any, for that particular item.

researching current resale prices on ebay & audiogon is the best way,the blue book service on audiogon is pretty well useless (and expensive) unless you have some seriously rare gear.

used audio prices fluctuate much like the stock market, gear that is selling for $100 today might be selling for $300 next month, usually the lowest sale price within the last 30 days or so for each certian peice of gear sets the selling standard for that peice.

the only way to get a real idea of what your gear will sell for is to watch average resale on both sites for a few weeks .

Audiogon is great if you have more esoteric gear to sell. It also seems to serve as the official "unofficial" Internet dealer for quite a few brands. Just look at the obscene amounts of "dealer demo", "mint", or "as-new b-stock" gear flying around. Yeah, right. lol
