Is there a general guide line for speaker size and amplification needed when considering room size for a home theater. For example 30'x30' room, with a 12' ceiling height. Any sugestions........

Not really. There are far too many variables to consider. Post what kind of speakers you're looking at, what your budget is, your listening habits (music types, how much music vs. HT), room contruction (materials), etc. There are too many things to address with an all encompassing article, as there are basically always exceptions to any claim.

Definitely too many variables to make definitive recommendations, but here's an idea to at least put you in the ballpark.

THX certified receivers must pass certain tests defined by THX and the various certifications are for different size rooms; eg 'Select' receivers are certified to reach reference level in 2000 cubic foot rooms whereas 'Ultra' are certified for rooms up to 3000 cubic feet. You could take a look at the THX and/or Dolby sites and see what each certification covers and then find receivers/amps that are certified. The specs for those receivers would give you a guideline to use.

One thing is for sure though...if your room is 30' x 30' it's going to take ALOT of power and very sensitive speakers to reach reference level.

Absolutely. You either are going to need a separate power amp, or a high end receiver mated to some Klipsch Reference speakers.
