How bad would it be to buy a DVD player without a DVI or other interface?

Would I be set back in the future for any DVD format upgrades beyond 480p? Is this happening? Does DVI and upsampling for DVD make a huge difference (I do have an HDtv)?

What's the future in DVD etc.????

Thanks

That depends on the TV you now have, or plan to buy in the relative near future. If the TV cannot take advantage of these digital interfaces, why buy a DVD player feature you cannot use. But, don't go out of your way to find one without it as even the under $100 have all sorts of interfaceing. It is cheap in mass quantity so they put it on almost all.

The future is HD-DVD and Blu-ray, so I don't think it will matter too much if you bought a current player that did not have DVI/HDMI right now. My TV had DVI, but I still use component from my 2900 that does not have DVI and picture quality is great.

Good DVD players are becoming a commodity product, inexpensive throw aways when something better comes that you need. No need to hang onto till the end :D

Only if you have money to burn.

I usually do a lot of research and buy a model that I feel will give me good value for what I paid new, AND have resale value if/when (more when than if) I decide to upgrade. If you buy a "throw away" player, then it's less likely to satisfy you in the meantime and have little or no resale value. My old Sony 560D served me well for years, but had little resale value, so I gave it to my daugher and it is still seeing duty in her bedroom.

Not everything must have resale value ;) Give it to goodwill ;)

Many products that have a high resale value were overpriced to begin with, so one often loses more money with them than with a good modestly priced model that one gives away.

The "give away" items usually get passed on to my family. Anything that has a value to someone else used gets sold. I buy and sell a fair amount of used gear too, so that initial value hit isn't taken by me usually :D I rarely pay MSRP for anything. Clearance, close-out for new models, open box, etc... just have to know how, when and where to look. Having some connections is good too ;)

I give plenty to goodwill, they don't need my old equipment. :)

Unfortunately, the operative word is "future". It's looking like Christmas 2006 (2005 plans are dead right now) before significant shipments. And maybe 2007 or 2008 at least before prices drop down close to today's levels. The uncertainty makes planning a little more difficult if you are on a budget.

I think upconverted DVDs on my High-def TV with an HDMI capable DVD player are incredible and I can even notice the difference from component. Just my opinion, but its defenitely better than non-upconverted
