This is my first purchase of a BR movie ... $8. After doing a search and not finding a thread dedicated to this I figured why not. Having seen this along with Hero, CTHD and COTGF over a year ago I remember liking Hero the best for the story and COTGF best for the film's visual content but ended up buying this because it there ... at the pawn shop. I figured if it's good enough for John, Darien, Jeff and Sean ... it's good enough for me.

I'm not sure if this would rank as a demo for video but I saw Jeff use it as such and was mighty impressed. I put the 'w/spoilers' in the title to make spoilers okay if anybody wants to include them and to warn folks. I know Darien has the drum scene pegged for great audio and Jeff has that scene in the woods with the girl standing alone with all the yellow flowers pegged as a great video demo. If anybody wants to point out any other outstanding scenes for audio or video that would be cool. Include Title and Chapter too if you like to make it easier to find.

I guess I need to see this one with all good comments that still are being said about it. It's amazing the amount of movies I haven't see...I'm sure j_garcia is ashamed to be on the same board a me.:D

It is one of the best filmed martial arts films period. Absolutely stunning cinematography.

The main reason why this one is a great audio disc is because it has an uncompressed Chinese track. The former DVD had a great dts track, but the uncompressed track is even better. The PQ is actually not very good on this disc, looking more like an upscaled SD DVD, as it was one of the earliest BDs released, but the cinematography is excellent. I felt that CTHD was better film, but this was one of my very first BD purchases also :) (CTHD was only recently released). The chapter you want to listen to is "Echo Game" :)

Not me, I think it is superior to CTHD in every way. Agreed it needs a better transfer, but with that being said, I still use it for demo material because it is so luscious to look at. I also agree the Chinese track is the way to go too.

Great cinematography ... check

Echo Game ... check (aka scene #3)

so-so transfer ... check

For me the uncompressed Chinese comes through as Stereo ... no HDMI rec'r. However DD EX sounds pretty killer since I don't know any different. The audio throughout the whole movie is terrific. The awesome color palate thing seems to kick off in scene #12 after Mei sets whatshisname free. The super sad music starts right about there too. I was in danger of shedding great big monkey tears.

This time around I was able to watch way more of the movie because I was less concerned with the subtitles. That girl is like super hot. I just know Rick has seen it many many times ... mostly alone. The acting was very well done too. I always wonder how good actors can pull off their scenes without giving away that there is a camera trained on them. The three main characters are portrayed very well.

COTGF had a hotter looking girl ... Rick. ;)

Unfortunately the video quality kinda sucks. I was pretty disappointed when I bought the BD years ago. You always assume that BD quality is going to be so much better than DVD and that isn't always the case. But the sound is great and it's a GREAT movie. One of my favorite martial arts flicks.

Although I don't get why they cast Takeshi Kaneshiro in the main role. I like him as an actor, but he's the only Japanese guy in a Chinese movie.

I haven't seen this movie in a while. Thanks for the reminder Monkey, I may have to just pop it in one of these days.
