Hello,

I just purchased a Samsung LN32B640 LCD and a Sony 560 blueray player. I am hooking the blue-ray player up to an old Yamaha 2095 receiver. It was a great receiver in its day and even now works great just doesnt have some of the newest connections.

I know the hdmi connection needs to go from the blueray to the tv for the best picture, and I guess I should use the optical out in the blueray to the receiver. Or is it better to use the optical out from the tv to the receiver?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Mike,

You're thinking the right way. To answer your question, it's better to use the optical from the blu-ray player to the receiver. If you use the optical output from the TV, the audio will be downmixed to two-channel because the TV will do that to any audio signal from an incoming HDMI connection. So:
  • Blu-ray optical to receiver = 5.1 surround sound
  • TV optical to receiver (for the blu-ray HDMI input) = Two-channel audio

The TV can output full 5.1 surround sound for it's own audio (such as over-the-air broadcasts), just not for anything connected via HDMI.
