First off, I have a complete home theatre set up.

What I'd like to know is if , while watching a regular tv broadcast, would I be able to hear it through my speakers? Seems simple, I just don't know what cable I would need and where to connect it.

Thank you.

well, if you have a cable box, you could route the audio out from your box to your reciever (red & white RCA cables) Or if you dont have a cable box, you could run the same cables from your TV audio out, to you reciever. And finally, if your tv doesn't have audio outputs, then you're pretty much S.O.L
Unless you have a VCR then you could run the cable through the vcr & use the audio outputs on your vcr to your reciever

if you listed the components u have, this could be a lot easier for us to tell you what to do :)

Ok, I don't want to hear all programs through my speakers, so how do I turn it on and off? Is there some switch on my receiver I need to use, like auxillary or something?

So no cable box, just a single cable from the wall?

There are a number of ways to do it if that is the case:
1. Cable from wall to TV and audio outs from TV to receiver. Select the input you connected to on the receiver and use the TV menu to turn off the TV's internal speakers (or turn the volume all the way down). To listen with just the TV, turn the TV speakers on and the receiver off.

2. Connect the cable from the wall to the vcr and from the vcr out to the TV. Alternatively, you can split the cable from the wall and feed one leg to the TV and one leg to the VCR. The VCR audio outs go to the receiver. Select the input on the receiver to which the VCR is connected and turn off the TV internal speakers. The VCR will probably have to be set to 'line out'.
