Hookup computer to receiver

Hey, I just bought myself a new system, and want to connect my computer to the receiver so I can play everything I have on it. The stereo and computer are not that far away, and getting an extender woulnd't really be necessary at the moment. My sound card has an output that outputs digital sound, in the form of a 3.5mm jack. What I am thinking of doing is connecting a mono-miniplug to rca jack, and then running a cable from the rca port to the digital coax port on the reciever. Would this preserve the digital signal until it got to the receiver? A fair amount of my music is in .flac, so I want to make sure I get the least amount of downgraded sound as possible with the computer hardware I have currently. Thanks a lot guys.

Yes, that will work if you configure the sound card to use its digital out.

You could also buy a pre-made cable that has an RCA connector on one end and a 3.5 mm mono mini plug on the other end.

Yea, I've seen those plugs online, but I can't get any of them at best buy. Since I have a best buy discount, it would be a lot cheaper for me to get the adapator and rca cable. Thanks for the confirmation though, I'm excited to get this working tonight.

I used the existing cable RG-6 running through the walls already. Not surprisingly, the jacks pop out behind both TVs/receivers, so it's a simple matter to use a $20 optical-coax converter from PE combined with screw-on Fcons. Instant distributed digital coax, with no interference to cable broadcasts or my broadband.
