Hooking up speakers with HDMI

I just bought a new house with speakers in the ceiling throughout the house and HDMI ports on the wall and was told by the previous owners that all I needed was a receiver, but how do I hook it up to where I can listen to radio from the receiver thru the speakers?

There isn't near enough information to assist you.
Do all the speakers terminate to a single head end? Exactly how many speakers per room? What speakers? Are there volume controls in each room? Is there a hdmi matrix switch at the head end? Do you have a budget? How much control do you need, ie remotes, apps, key pads? Do you need multi source for each room (zone)? Is there cat 5/6 ran to each room ? Info info info

We can't help. Those whole house systems are usually a nightmare, put in by people who have no idea what they are doing. A lot are totally useless.

If you are new to this, you will need to hire a pro with instruments to try and work out what will in all probability be an awful bird's nest.

Look for a metal enclosure in the laundry room, mechanical equipment room or a closet- if the rooms have HDMI ports, they have to go to a single location for distribution. You'll also see speaker cabling in this place. Some contractors place a label on the cover, in the event that some kind of additional work is needed. If a label isn't there, you'll need to find out when the work was done and if you received any documentation from the previous homeowner, look through it to find any info possible.

Now, on to the original question- HDMI does nothing for speakers.

HDMI ports don't make a lot of sense, maybe take a photo of these ports and post it up...

Headphones too. Sean olive has been blogging a lot about them lately. I know the akg q701 headphones I once had were some of the most accurate sounding headphones I’ve ever listened to.

You bought a house.
Maybe you can ask the previous owner if he is still in town to explain in person as HDMI is not for speaker connections but video/audio interphase between a receiver and a video source.
