my price is 1000-1500 for everything.

Is Denon the receiver brand I can't go wrong with?

should i spend the most on a sub?

any suggestion would be appreciated

I anticipate having a 42" Phillips 1080P LCD

The big question is, if you have any restrictions with speakers. Meaning do you need wall mounts, flat panel, bookshelf?

Do you need a HDMI receiver?

How large is the room this system will be installed in?

16x13 is the area I can put it in the room it self is actually bigger.

yes on the HDMI receiver. I already have a xbox360 and will have a blu-ray player one day as well.

no restrictions on the speakers other than i'd prefer not to put any in the ceiling

For that size room, you won't need to spend a lot of money on a subwoofer IMO.

Here's another option:

receiver: http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/receivers/marantz-sr4002/

You might be able to find this one on sale for a little less. Also, check ubid for a bit more savings.

Speakers: http://www.ascendacoustics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=S13-12&Category_Code=PPLR-1000

These are great sounding speakers and this system includes the sub. Depending on your room requirements, you may want to upgrade the sub, or wait on it till later. retail price on the speakers system + receiver is $1,697. However, you can probably save a couple hundred bucks if you wait for a sale, or consider a refurbished model, staying within your budget. :)

Good rule of thumb is to allocate the majority of your budget to good speakers, and get a good sub that will perform well within your room dimensions. Any of the above suggestions have gotten great reviews by many here, I don't think you'd go wrong with any one you chose. :)

With that size room it is not so much you need to spend alot for a sub, but you need to get the most sub for your money, HSU Research makes fantastic subs that put many to shame at a fraction of the cost. For example I had a Definitive Tech 15in Powered super cube (6 or so years ago it was their statement piece and a very good performer), I ran across an HSU Research
12V powered sub and it was way more punch, control, depth and doesnt call attention to itself and it was less than half the cost. Dr. HSU is an extremely helpful but somewhat hard to understand owner who actually answers calls.
