Hi guys and gals
I'm new and my knowledge is slim to nonw when it comes to this stuff. I'm finishing of my basement and want to pre-wire for a home theatre. Up until a day ago I was about to purchase a Bose system but after some research I've decided that the money is a waste for the product received. I want something very user friendly in a 5.1 system. Right now I will simply run wire in the walls to where I will be hanging the TV and then research before I buy. The room is large 20 X 30 8+ ceilings. (Insert suggestions here!)

Thanks

I don't know how much you've built but here's some advice on the building process first

1) Leave yourself open for one or two passive subwoofers at the back of the room, with 12 awg wire for higher power handling. :D
2) Leave yourself open for rear surrounds as well (7.x) "just in case". 14 awg wire is fine.
3) Build an isolated, but ventilated electronics rack for placing amps etc in the future.
4) Install a dedicated 20a circuit or two instead of the usual 15a circuit.
5) Build your walls to flex and absorb bass. Perhaps read this:
http://www.earsc.com/pdfs/engineering/understandingdamping.pdf
Especially the part about constrained layer damping (CLD)
6) Make a conduit for a projector "just in case" :D

Besides all that, i'm glad you decided against Bose. That stuff's just bad for your health.

Can I get a rough budget, if possible, as well as some information on your seating position in the room?

I'm guessing a false wall with a 128" acoustically transparent screen and a nice projector is out of the question, eh?

Here’s a room of similar size! http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43033

We can provide suggestions that run between $500 - $500K, but that doesn’t help until you give us more info regarding budget, use of the room, room layout, lighting conditions, etc. What I’d do with the room probably isn’t the same as your vision.

If you’re just looking for a relatively low cost setup to go with a plasma within a portion of that room, then:

Onkyo 608
Panasonic BDP-210
Infinity P363/PC351/P153
Epik Legend

I don't have as much knowledge as some of the people on here, i'm more of a beginner myself... but i have tested out a few systems you might be interested - it sounds like you were originally looking for a smaller set of speakers to complete your 5.1 system...
if you are looking to stick to the smaller size - i personally like teh Anthony Gallo Micro's, and I just now picked up an Orb Mod1 setup to try. I am very happy with the Anthony Gallo's - and hear the Orb's are as good if not better. You may want to look into those setups. They are comparable in price (and styling?) to the Bose cubes (a friend of mine has one their setups ) but the sound difference is huge.
