Hello all moving into a new apartment and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a new Home Theater Surround Sound system. Not looking for something earth shattering but something that will get my the "best bang for my buck" Any suggestions on a home theater system? I don't need a dvd intergrated as I have a stand alone one. thanks for any help!

.....size of the room, conditions of the room, (hardwood floors, carpet, open ends or sides, etc), and most importantly, budget, please.....

18 x 16 feet, carpet, going with these speakers: KLH 6-pc. 600-Watt Home Theater Speaker System - MP06HT. Let try and stay under $300, those speakers are $120, so i have $180 left to work with for a decent receiver. I don't want something earth shattering just something "decent"
thanks for any help!

Hmm...you're going to have a hard time filling that room with decent sound on that kind of a budget. I'm not trying to rip on you, but in the $1000 and under catagory, spending an extra $100 can make a world of difference. I would say that you should try to stretch out your budget a few hundred. You can do a lot under $1000, but I really don't think you'll be satisfied with the KLH system.

Here's what I would recommend for a KILLER system that you should be happy with for years:

2 Pairs BIC DV62SIB Bookshelves from X-10: $248.98 shipped
1 BIC DV62CLR Center from X-10: $104.49 Shipped
1 BIC V1220 Subwoofer from X-10: $190.99 shipped.

Pioneer VSX-815K receiver from J&R: $249.99 Shipped

Grand Total: $794.45 shipped.

OMG THAT'S SO EXPENSIVE! Not really...and the performance will be levels above the KLH system you were looking at. Yes, the price is higher. But I think you can save up for a little while longer and afford this system. The only thing not included is cables. $50 at Home Depot should take care of that.

If you are set on the KLH system though, I think you should look at getting a Refurb H&K AVR-135 off of eBay. They should be in your price range. Another option would be an entry-level Onkyo. Still, if you CAN wait and afford them system I've priced out, then GO FOR IT.

I do appreciate the insights for the time being I think I will stick with the KLH system. I have a kenwood VR-405 receiver with surround sound. It about 4 years old sound pretty good. I just wanted something a little "better" A friend said those KLH speakers are pretty nice sounding. I know I can't compete with the top dogs here with $3000+ receivers and stuff. Can i get a decent receiver for around $200 that will "push" those speakers? Also will the Pioneer VSX-815K receiver be "too much" for those speakers or will it be "ok" Thanks for anymore help! This forum rocks!

.....Rubicks13, so, for about the same money, you don't want to hear the alternative speakers suggested?....and they were suggested by Jaxvon?....have you heard either speakers?.....

.....disclaimer--we may end up referencing you in group workshops if you haven't heard either brand....

I am not following you, Jaxvon made a suggestion which I wish I could afford. However that is out of my budget. I wanted to know if there was a decent reciever to go along with the KLH speaker set that i have. Let say I get the Pioneer VSX-815K receiver to go along with my KLH setup, I can always in a year or so get the other speakers.
thanks for any help!

.....sorry if I offended, Rubicks13, it's just we speak our mind....we feel systems should have some "bang" quality, and that might mean a small, and I mean small, budget arrangement....you sought opinions, we ran scans, haha.....happy listening......

Sorry if you didn't follow Mulester...his writing style is...shall we say an acquired taste?

Anyway, sorry you don't have the budget. If you already HAVE the speakers, then I shall gladly insert my foot into my mouth. Regarding the receiver question though, the Pioneer will do you quite well. It has lots of connection options and should last you through a speaker upgrade once you get the funds to do so. It has sufficient power to drive moderately efficient speakers, as well as lots of connections so you can add more stuff to your system (like a PS2, Tivo, etc) without having to invest in external switches.

BTW, here's a review by Audioholics of the Pioneer. For the price I quoted at J&R, you have to call them up. When I did, they told me $249.99 with free shipping.
