Home theater speaker advice

I am planning to upgrade my home theater and want to start with the speakers. My budget is $2000. (with or without subwoofer) I have read some good reviews about the Rockets from AV123 and am interested in them. I am planning to get their HT #2 package (Featuring: RS 750 Sig Front, RSC 200 Center, RSS 300 Rear). I am 70% movie and 30% music lover :) I really like the thriller (on your edge) movie, so the speakers besides the car chases, and action scenes, should be able to reproduce the soft and subtle sounds too :).

I would appreciate the advice from the experts in this forum. Here are my room measurements:

The family room doubles as the home theater and the dimension of this room is 13'x19'x10' (WxLxH). The room is open at the back to the breakfast nook (9' length) and the kitchen (15'length).

1. Surround speakers can only be placed behind and above the sitting position, on the back wall of the family room
2. Need to get the full movie impact at a normal listening volume (wife dislikes turning the volume up :)) Also since my HT will be in the family room, I cannot turn the volume up too much.

Thanks for all your help.

Hmmm, seems the rockets are a good choice, since no feedback from any forum members for other speakers. I was recommended to the rockets by some people in another forum. I will be auditioning the speakers this Tuesday and them make the decision.

I was expecting some more choices in my price range, so that I can check them in the local audio stores.

Thanks

True! Just saw the post myself.

As you can see I am a HUGE fan of Phase Tech Speakers. Give them a try. There is a sweet review in this forum for the PC series. I have the Velocity Series and they are right in your price range for the V-12 System. Great sounding speakers for an AWESOME price. Just check out there website for a dealer near you and check them out. It would definatly be worth your trip.

It was a VERY well written write up. I give you 4 thumbs up. (I grabbed my wife's hands to assist!) LOL

I am trying to save up the loot to upgrade to the PC series myself.

May I suggest the following from PSB;
Image T65 Mains
Image C60 Center
Image B25 Surrounds or S50 (dipoles)

Here's my review on the Image T45s, the smaller brother to the T65s

Phase Techs or PSB's would work well in this case. Both are very nice, quite neutral speakers. I like the Phase Tech as it is a great value (not taking anything away from PSB though).

I would also look at B&W's 600 series. Probably a little better for music, IMHO. (1) LCR600 S3, (1 pr.) DM603 S3, (1 pr.) DM601 S3 = $1,950.00 at retail. No sub, but add one later. :)

First of all, let me compliment you on your decision to start your upgrade with speakers. This is a good idea in almost all cases, because, first, speakers are most likely the weakest link in your audio chain (along with possible acoustic problems in your room and a bad recording), and, second, one must know what speakers one is using in order to determine what kind of amplification is needed. So you are showing better judgment than most people from the start.

What I recommend that you do is listen to as many speakers as you can stand to, with your favorite recordings. And it is good to listen to as many different types of speakers as you can, because different types of speakers can sound different from each other. You may turn out to be a fan of planar speakers, and you could get a set of budget Magnepan speakers direct from the factory for that price. Or they may not be to your liking, and you may prefer something else. You, however, must listen to the different possibilities for yourself, as it is you who will live with your decision.

One more thing: I would definitely get a subwoofer. But, of course, you may feel differently.

I think both reviews are for the non 'sig' versions. The sig version is a little has little more added treble energy.

To me AV123 offers some of the best bang for the buck and quality speakers, heavy, well built and well designed.

I've heard all the speakers mentioned thus far, except the Phase Tech's, and would take the Rockets any day. That's just my opinion though and it's not everyone's. See if someone around you has a similar setup and see if you can't get a demo (check AV123's forum and ask).

I also say get a sub, check out HSU or SVS.

Hi Guys:

Thanks for all great suggestions. Today I got the opportunity to audition the rockets (750's, RS200, RS300) in one of the owners house. I was really impressed with their sound. I have listened to several other speakers and so far for the price, the rockets sound the best. My only concern is that the surrounds are too big. So I am thinking of getting the Axion QS8's for the surround. Do you guys think that I mioght have problem in matching the main and center with the surrounds, since they are from 2 different companies ?

Thanks for all your help.
