Home theater question

I have a friend who just moved to a new house which has a room designed to be a home theater. He is rather new to this area and I have helped him some but his price range far exceeds anything I have looked into. So I was hoping for some suggestions and comments.

The room is 16.5 feet by 11.5 feet by 8 feet the ceiling is vaulted so at its highest point it is 10 feet.

The room is going to be used primarily for movies and secondarily as a music room 70/30.

He wants to spend around 12 grand for the set up.

He has access to good discounts on jamo, denon, yamaha, mitsubishi, onkyo and epson although he is open to other brand suggestions as well And is leaning towards a THX certified system because he likes the idea of industry standards.

Any help at all would be great, I really dont want to mislead him, so I just told him I would do what I can.

This is what he is currently leaning towards:

Speakers: Jamo D7 speaker set up
Projector (must be 1080p): Mitsubishi HC5000 or the Epson Power Light Home Cinema
Screen: No idea, he just knows he wants it permanently wall mounted
Receivers: Denon 4806CI or Yamaha RX-Z9

He wants to spend $12K for the whole set-up, and $4K of it in his receiver. IMO I say that's a bad Idea. I don't know how much of the budget is being spent of the video side (the Projector Mitsubishi HC5000, or the Epson Power Light Home Cinema, & Screen).

EDIT: I just looked it up. About $5K for the projector, and what is a screen, $1K? So lets say $6K total for the video.

$6K Video
$4K receiver
$2K speakers?

$6K Video
$4K receiver
$2K speakers?
Price isn't always the best indicator, but I'd also say that ratio is out of whack. At a minimum, swap the receiver and speaker amounts.

If it were me, I'd reduce the receiver cost by 3/4. The Onkyo TX-SR804 is THX Select 2 certified and can be had for well under $1K.

Also I would take that THX certification with a grain of salt...

Just because it says THX doesn't mean when you are all done setting it all up, that it will be THX certified... It gets much deeper then just buying the components that say THX... Layouts, sound measurements, perfect speaker placement, crossovers... and on and on... From my reading and research you should just worry about what sounds good to you...

I think you should be thinking about seperates for that speaker setup, as I would imagine they will require some good quality horsepower, but thats just me... I personally would find a different speaker setup.
Use a lesser priced receiver as a prepro and a good amp.
You can make tradeoffs here and there.... and still achieve the same output.

I spent 12K on my setup... and it sounds awesome to me, my receiver and amp both say THX but I honestly could give a dump about that.. I could have painted that on with a crayon, just to say it says THX.

Don't forget to keep some acoustic room treatments in a budget as well.

Good Luck

HT system

Nice budget.
Also check out the new JVC 1080p front projector in his budget. It is getting great reviews:

Since you mention a 2-channel system, have him check out the Onix Strata Mini's, Onix Ref 3's and upcomming LS6 line source from AV123.com. Many owners are using the Mini's with the Onix Ref line for HT.

He can definetly afford seperates in his budget including Emotiva, Outlaw, or Rotel. They look cool and have plenty of power. You can always keep a great amp and upgrade the pre-pro for new processing and video features.

I would get one of the Emotiva Pre/Pro Amp combos, and of course a SVS or HSU sub.

Thanks for the help guys. I have relayed much of the information to him and we both appreciate it greatly and any more wouldnt be turned down ;).

The main reason he wanted to stay in the brands listed in the original post is he has way to get everything near cost so the retail ratios and his would be highly different. Not to mention he is a fan of jamo speakers after hearing mine and likes the receiver i use to push them (Denon 3806). But I have him convinced to atleast audition some other brands and see what he likes rather than spending all his money without comparing.

Good job, not selling him on the same brand speakers, not that they aren't great, just that everyone should go out and listen... That is a lot of money to just pick something out that is big and would be impressive, but could possibly fall short of his expectations... Cause - Ya never Know...

To me that would be a monstrosity looking at those speakers, but if they were hidden it wouldn't be a problem... :)

good Luck

Hahaha Im pretty sure he actually likes the look of those speakers besides his wife will have to approve the things anyways. I'm just glad something of what I learned here isn't being wasted and while I love my speakers if I had his kind of money I don't know if I would end up with Jamo's but I got a deal I couldn't pass.
