Home Theater Question

Several years ago, I purchased a HTIB, ONKYO 7.1 THX Cert System that had a total of 1035w. The receiver has finally crapped out and cannot be economically repaired. So, I have decided to purchase a better receiver with this year's Fantasy Football winnings! I am currently looking at the Denon AVRX-6300h. Now, I'm sure that my previous speakers will work, but will not truly optimize the new receiver. I know the sky is the limit, but what speakers should I be looking at as I upgrade my system?

I use an Optoma HD20 projector and primarily use my system for watching movies and playing video games. My space is 23' x 28' x 7.5'. Goal in a year or so would be to upgrade to a 4k projector as prices drop.

My previous speakers

1 x active subwoofer - external - 20 - 100 Hz - wired 2 x main channel speaker - 2-way - external - 50 - 45000 Hz - 8 Ohm - wired 1 x center channel speaker - 2-way - external - 50 - 45000 Hz - 8 Ohm - wired 4 x surround channel speaker - 2-way - external - 50 - 45000 Hz - 8 Ohm - wired

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!

Lots of good speaker manufacturers for an unspecified budget! Some good affordable brands: Ascend, EMP Tek, Hsu Reseach, Revel, SVS, JBL Pro, to name just a few.

I was trying to stay around $6k. But I wonder based on my room size is the 6300 with a 7.2.4 too much? Should I go with the 4300 or even s920 and have a 7.2.4 or 5.2.2? I was looking into the Klipsch Reference Premeir speakers, however, I had a friend tell me that if I'm contemplating the 6300 or even the 4300 I should spend more on the speakers and look BW CM series. This would double my speaker budget.

Regardless, I will be purchasing the speakers in phases, I'll buy the front 3 and then purchase the rest later.

I would step down to the 4300 unless you rally want those extra height speakers. The difference in sound would be subtle but the difference in price would not be. I would not be looking at Klipsch or B&W in that budget. I would be looking at Revel, RBH, JBL Pro. If that 6k budget is just for the front three, look at some JBL LSR6332 speakers. Those will not be beat for accurate sound for the price.

Are these speakers going behind an acoustically transparent screen? Will they be out in the room and need to look nice? Is the $6k budget for all speakers or just the front 3?

Yeah, my initial thought was $6k on all the speakers. I could get the Klipsch RP from crutchfield for $6k.

However, now that I'm looking into speakers it seems that my budget might have to go up...

The speakers will all be visible. I project on to a painted wall. They don't have to look "pretty", I'm a single guy so...

Klipsch RP isn't that bad. I would get the regular bookshelf speaker to use as a center speaker instead of their regular center speaker. I would use the bookshelf speakers as surround speakers as well. Stay away from the Klipsch subwoofers though, you can do better.

Here is a decent system that will be very high bang-for-the-buck:
3 Emotiva Stealth 8s for the front stage
4 Emotiva Airmotiv 6s for the surrounds
2 Hsu VTF15h mk2s for subwoofers

All have deals going on at the moment which makes the overall setup a real bargain. All are very good performers for the money. The Emotiva speakers are self powered so you don't have to use the AVR's amplifier. This will prolong its life and reliability greatly. The whole setup should come in around 5k. It will be very powerful too; the subwoofers are real beasts and the speakers are using very good drivers.

Thanks! I need to see if I can find a place here in Columbus where I can listen to them.

Those are all manufacture direct, so you audition them in your own home. return them for a full refund if you don't like them.

There is a well known Internet direct vendor a couple of hours from you if you want to support an Ohio business. Power Sound Audio. Great subs and speakers: https://www.powersoundaudio.com/. For instance, a couple of their 15v subwoofers could be good for your space. :)
