Home Theater Cruise - Day One

Still, we're on a cruise - and a bad day cruising - we'll it isn't really that bad, is it? In fact, we were able to witness some very practical demonstrations for some of the concepts we've been hammering home for the past few years. For example, we spent our first evening studying the effects of wave propogation and were fortunate enough to see a live 3D demonstration that was very representative of the effect of bass standing waves and modes that can be found rippling through a typical home theater room.

Ya know I just love to come here and read about the problems ya’ll are having with the waves after spending 3 hours in a 120 degree attic crawling on top of Owens Corning pink now back to the Itchy and Scratchy show

I hope things get better for ya, but if they don’t there is always the Bar or Casino

Not only that but why would anyone want to swim in that warm, uncrowded, crappy pool when they could be swimming in this instead.:p

Hey, don't complain. At least you're not land locked in Ohio. ;)

I just purchased 21 rolls of R25 O/C for our attic. I can't wait to roll around in that stuff.

Hope you guys are having fun.

Bring it on.

I've gone from this:

to this:

in a month while still working full time and doing everything myself.

Oh, please. You guys are like a bunch of big babies. WE have serious problems here and issues that cause us great stress...

For instance, should I do the filet mignon this evening or the scallops? Or both? It's so difficult to decide... ;)

HT Cruise party tonight had a new JVC projector with "2500k" resolution. Looked very nice and there simply were no pixels, though I certainly wouldn't expect any for full resolution DILA on a ~100" screen. Source was uncompressed HDTV at 1080i upconverted to 1080p via hard disk recorder and video processor. I'll try to get more info and pics - had to run to do some posting.

Dang what a coincidence, I am trying to decide between the Hungry Man Turkey dinner or the Banquet Mexican Fiesta. I think I will go Turkey dinner because I have heard that Boons Farm apple is a very nice pick for the Hungry Man turkey ;)

Unless I'm confused, kisses are "O" and hugs are "X". Ray, methinks you've sucked in too much of the pink stuff recently!

The boat is doing more rocking now while I am off of it than when I was one it. I hope these dizzy spells go away soon. I went to a party tonight at my best friends house and almost fell in his pool while we were all dancing. Oddly a few drinks mixed with some of the killer RumI brought back from Caribbean temporarily straightened me out until the buzz wore off

mmmmm rum. :)

So how many booths were setup in this boat?

Riddle me this,

If a boat full of speakers sank in the middle of the ocean and no one was around to hear it, would it make a sound?®

 I can't believe I made that up, its so Pro! And now, trade marked!

But seriously, how was said trip. See anything you wanted, that you might get?

It wasn't really that type of conference... In fact, it was quite "different". We'll try to explain more in a couple of subsequent articles. Let's just say that rather than the expected open discourse, some of the panels were led by someone with a very obvious (and misconceived, in our opinion) agenda. Made for some very interesting and lively sessions. We were so dumbfounded that we decided to wait to post our opinions and thoughts on it so that we had sufficient time to digest and put our thoughts together in a constructive manner.

...most so-called full range speakers cannot play down to 40Hz, let alone 20Hz, linearly without major compression at high output levels.
What is 'compression', what is happening to the driver when it is occurring, and what does 'compression' actually sound like?

Extreme frequency response rolloff and increased distortion at high power levels much like you see in subs, but only worse. You rarely see loudspeaker manufacturers disclose frequency response charts at various power levels.

As for sound, you can hear disproportionate and non linear bass response, driver break up, distortion, etc.

Because few full-range speakers have drivers the size of those in subs?

For those that do, will the speakers typically possess large (say 8" or more) drivers?

Correct, which is why its usually better to run all speakers through bass management, and using up to 4 subs in a room to handle anything below 80Hz. This isn't new and has been touted by Toole and THX for years. Sadly, many recording engineers and a particular editor of a print magazine don't seem to have a good handle on it.
