I am looking for something below $1200 but I want some nice room correction and sound.

I have 3 front, 2 side, 2 rear and 2 ceiling speakers along with 1 sub

Also, is it worth using the 2 ceiling as ceiling ATMOS or should I move it to front heigh?

Oof. This is a really bad time to need to buy electronics (due to chip shortages and still delayed production and shipping schedules from the pandemic, not to mention that the HDMI 2.1 issue has not fully been rectified).

Regardless, my vote would be Denon 3700. You can get that for 1299.00 new, or 1099.00 factory refurb (A4L).

Audyssey XT32 does a pretty good job with room correction, especially if you take advantage of the Aud App ($20).

how does XT32 compare to Dirac live?

Might depend where the two ceiling speakers are as the processing the 818 had for front heights could simply be different than the placement for Atmos....I like the 3700 suggestion, tho. You can get very good results using XT32 and the Audyssey Editor App. Not sure what avr with Dirac you're considering....

Dirac is considered to be one of the best room correction options, but it does not come cheap.

Nothing at that price point! ;)

Full Dirac options don't seem available for anything but top level gear. I've heard rumors new Onkyo will be using Dirac... but I haven't heard anything about them being available yet... much less if they will be any good considering the financial failings and resulting sale of the company... (Now owned and managed by the same company that runs Klipsch iirc. Frankly I won't trust them until I see some good third party reviews from AH and ASR. Anything from the YT Fluff Patrol and Audio Fan Bois Society is not to be believed.)

I was considering the upcoming Onkyo NR-7100

I'd wait until it's out and fully vetted/tested by others personally but then again that may be something you want to do. What with all the changes Onkyo's going thru and with adding new tech as well.....I'd just prefer to wait and see. Onkyo/Integra used Audyssey at one point, then the much lesser AccuEQ of their own up til now. Altho they may have incorporated some of Pioneer's MCACC tech towards the end after they absorbed Pioneer (and believe it was Pioneer that gained them the Dirac deal too). Hard to know if you'd be working out bugs and getting frustrated.... Let alone sales/distribution/support changes that could affect the experience. YMMV.

ps I do have an older Onkyo repaired under that network/hdmi board extended warranty thing and though very expensive I'm sure to fix, they did it well and quickly. I do hope Onkyo becomes a viable competitor to D&M and Yamaha, tho.

What would you recommend instead of the Onkyo?

The Denon 3700 (or above) would be one. Equivalent sister company Marantz models if the price is right. Maybe others but availability as mentioned may get in the way.

As of a couple of hours ago Amazon had the Denon 3700 in stock.
