Holy speaker height Batman...

Hello all... I was playing around tonight (the better half is out ;) ) and I took my Paradigm Mon 7s and put them on some paint buckets to raise the height of them. yeah I know but that's all I had laying around that was the same height... Anyway, I will try to describe the difference. The sound opened up and I immediately noticed a HUGE in the imaging. I actually got up and check to see if my center channel was on. the sound stage was much wider and the sound seemed fuller. I would have never though raising the mains 7.5 inches would have made that much difference, but it sure did.
Has anybody else noticed this type of thing???
Who would have thought paint was the missing ingredient???

Anyway, on to make some better stand… And then paint them :D

So did elevating the speakers put the tweeters closer to ear level? I think that would account for the huge difference.

I find many towers put the tweeter height too low for the typical room with furniture. One of the big reasons why I don't like towers. Rooms aren't perfect, and most setups usually don't revolve around the speakers (mine more or less does), so what you say doesn't surprise me. Most likely it wasn't that the tweeter was raised so much as the midrange was. They make stands for towers... I'd suggest some DIY stands that are about 6-8"

I think it was due to the special paint buckets I was using... :D

I was thinking the same thing about the speaker height and the furniture being in the way. All I can say is I am going to make some stands this weekend about 7.5. I am very happy wih the improvement. Plus that should help by me some time while I save up for new speakers. I am really interested in those SWANS...

Try raising your amp a foot and see if that will make any difference:D

That is why some here, me included, talk about speakers and room acoustics mattering the most. That includes speaker placement in direction and altitude, as you found out:D

I will *NOT* go off on the paint bucket for fun...I will *NOT*....

Regarding the Swans. They're a subsidiary of Hi-Vi research, a Chinese-based company that makes like 2 million speakers a year. Not that their drivers are crap, but I'd personally go for a speaker line with a little less quantity involved.

But now that you've fallen in love again with your Monitor 7s, isn't it amazing how much placement and acoustics can affect your sound? I just wish I had more room to play with my setup. My room has far too much stuff in it to get the most of my setup. Oh well, it still sounds good, so I can't WAIT to get it in a better room.

I told ya you need to tweak it more. See, I saved you thousands of dollars...

Good stuff,

I too wish I had less crap in my room (bed, computer and desk, guitar amp, desser, crap etc) so I could have one of those HT rooms with 2 couches, 1 infront of the other and the rear one raised up a bit.

One day...

.....EdWelly, you didn't try 15 inches off the floor with the front mains?....fill the chamber, and you're still in the initial projection of the cones......

....RollinRocker, not to answer for SheepStar, but getting the mains off the floor removes mud in many cases, and you've got your subs to keep you warm....raise the TV accordingly, if possible.....

I wouldn't know, I didn't to any lifting.

I see you edited your question, but mules got it. Lifting the speaker generally gets rid of some room gain.

.....agreed, Mtrycrafts, Samurai Rare, (thanks be lifted), projection as to the room, and enough bright room acoustics to sound live....but you're still in a hole about watts-continuous bringing authority and life.....

They must be those special non-conducting paint buckets. Now all you need to complete your sound is a full set of porcelain cable elevators.................

Everybody is aware that I have been complaining about my speakers but after last night, I have fallen in love again. I just cannot get over 7 1/2 inches making that big of a difference.

Not that I noticed. The sound was a lot warmer and more full - yeah I know these terms are useless, but I hope that hepls some...

My couch sits pretty low - 15" would bring the speakers above my head. I am think 9 inches would be about perfect for tweater level to my ear level.

I could only imagine how much room accoustics could help out my setup (hard wood floors)

Mule, I have been eyeing the Rotel RMB-1075 amp. I have seen it on Audiogon from $700 and up. I like that idea...
