I've had two HK 1600s in 4yrs both failed. By failed I mean the current one will not pass through HDMI from Roku, DVD, Nflx, etc. I have to plug HDMi directly to TV thence audio stereo from TV to HK which then "simulates 7.1" (logic 7) output to speakers. I don't remember what exactly was wrong with the first one exchanged on warranty on 2011. The current unit is one yr out of warranty.
Yes, I realize the 1600 was a low end "bargain" system, just like my other 30 yr old amps, which is all I need or want. Is HK now notoriously unreliable? Is there a class action suit against HK for mfg faulty products? I see HK scores low on your user poll. I've found many posts all over the I-net complaining about dead HK HDMI pass through. My college dorm HK "all-in-one" systems from back in the 60s was a great little box that survived lots of abuse, beer spills etc. What is going on with these people? I thought this AV technology was rather well perfected. Is one or two years of service the "new age" expectation?
I like to keep devices long term. I acquired two 2nd hand receiver amps, AdCom GTP500 and a JVC RX220 more than 30 yrs ago and they both still serve well as computer sound devices or radio receivers in other parts of the house. I am seriously considering the Denon brand if they even make anything in the below $300 range.
