I just bought the Yamaha rxv 2400 for $700. I can't imagine anything being better for the money.

I have it running as a 7.1 system, but can actually expand it out to a 9.1 if I get the my little used 2 channel amp from the other room and hook it up for the two presence channels up front.

I compared it to the Denon 3803 head to head at the store, and saw virtually no difference. The Yamaha is actually rated at higher watts and lower distortion than the Denon, and it cost about $200 less. I did n't hear it vs the HK.

If you're not very adept at setting up speaker levels etc, you will be amazed with the Yamaha set up. It was like having someone run an Avia check on your room. I just set up the microphone and pressed the Auto button, and it set everything for me! Of course, I like a brighter sound than a perfect set up, so I went in manually and adjusted everything to my liking.

For Movies, the system is unbelievable for the cost. I can't make up my mind which formats to use, because they all sound so good... THX, PLII, DTS. In terms of music on two channels... it does well. the only system I could hear noticeable difference with was B&Ks$3900 systems. I don't think there is anything that can I can detect audibly even with deafening volumes and cheap Klipsch reference speakers and M&K subwoofer that would make me prefer another "audiophile" receiver. In the store, when paired with the same klipsch speakers I use at home, the receivers which cost 5 times as much sounded identical. I can only tell the difference when played with higher end speakers such in the $4000 a pair category.

This doesn't answer your question specifically about a comparison with HK 630, but I can tell you I am very pleased with Yamahas capabilities. At least I am secure that I won't be upgrading to a new receiver for several years. I doubt anybody will need a 11.1 system.

Rick,
You may want to double check your psuedo "9.1" setup again and find out exactly what you are hearing. This unit can not output true 9.1 signals. I would be a little more cautious in spreading a rumor like this. Have you actually tested this theory, and if so what were the results? Maybe your 2400 is the only one on the market that can distinguish between the Surr Back and the Presence channels when played simultaneously, but nobody else's can...

Hi,
I have an upgraded THX ULTRA II Denon 5800 which has 7 separate channels of amplification which is apparantly a must for this particular THX.

I have surrouds A, B, and effects connected= 6 speakers. I also have the front three and the subwoofer.

My feeling is that although there are 9 speakers working (during film only) surrrounds A and B are duplicates and the effects surrounds are only discrete occaisionally usually they matrix surrounds A and B.

So My thought is that I am running generally 5.1 and occaisionally 6.1 but Never 9.1.

My mistake. The extra fronts weren't really playing as presence. Just as "B" speakers.

Hey Ross,
Check out Dellasalla's review on this site. Go to page 4 (On the gladiator page) and click on Comparison matrix for operational modes. It seems to support that I really was getting "presence" and not more back surrounds.

If you mean on the Yamaha receiver the answer is yes, you have to set the sub out to BOTH in that case.

I just bought a Harman/Kardon AVR 7200 receiver at SoundCity.com for $799 and it is available from OneCall.com for $789.00 (shipping is higher from onecall).

I think this receiver certainly could factor into your decision.

Rick, I also prefer a brighter sound. In the eq selection of the set-up, you have options of which freq(flat, low, mid, high) you would like priority given to. Try this, & when finished, go into manual set-up under eq & switch back & forth BTW PEQ(optimizer setting) and GEQ(your setting) and I bet you will prefer the optimizer setting. I did!
