HK AVR 240 - need help connecting with HDMI components

Hi , I need help!

this is my first post, and i'll be brief. I have a HK AVR 240 receiver, a Sony HD ready TV, HDMI Direct TV receiver/ DVR, and Oppo dvd player. The dvd player, direct tv receiver, and the tv all have HDMI ports but none on my HK receiver.

How do I hook these up without compromising my system??? I assume I could go HDMI from the DVD to the TV? Or do I go HDMI from the Direct TV receiver into the TV, and then composite cable link the DVD into the TV. OR... Should i try composite cables running out of my HK 240. I am hoping I don't need to go out and get a new HDMI receiver, and that I can make this system work.

Any hints would be greatly appreciated. I would love to hear what you audiophiles think. If this post sounds confusing, I am sorry but I am up in arms regarding what to do!!

thanks,

The Oppo needs to go direct to the TV with HDMI for the upconversion capabilities to work. The DVR is likely 1080i, so you could use component (3 RCAs, not composite which is 1) and still get the full benefits, though HDMI will give you both audio and video on one cable. In both cases, you will need a digital audio connection from the DVD and Oppo to the receiver for sound since it will not be passing the HDMI feeds.

making a bit more sense now...

thank you for your response..

do you mean hook the DVR/receiver & Oppo via optical into the 240? And if so I am assuming the 240 will recognize the individual units and sound will be fine?

I am going to be hooking this system up tomorrow (thur. july 19) and will follow these guidelines. Sounds like the HK AVR 240 lacking HDMI will not
be such a huge deal and i will still get a darn good system going here. By the way, i am using a Polk Audio RM6750 speaker system, and in addition, 2 very powerful Klipsch RVX54 floor speakers. These speakers are what got me off my butt and into looking for a decent system. I bought them from a friend who was moving.

Should I hook the Klipsch up as the main L and R speakers?

many thanks,

colin

The HK240 has two Optical inputs, so you should have no problem going from both the Oppo and DVR via optical. You will simply have to change inputs on the reciever when you switch from watching TV to a DVD.

I don't have any experience with those speakers you mention. Try them both and see what sounds better to you (it's what this hobby is all about!). Enjoy your new system! :)

I would say yes, use the Klipsch for the fronts, but I can also safely say that will mean you probably won't be happy with the center channel from the Polks compared to them.

i'll give it a try

thanks so much guys,
i will give the klipsch a try as the L and R, and hopefully the center will be sufficient. If not, sometime down the road a new center and an 10" sub.

please check back on this thread later today - as i hook all this up i may need some expert advice.

by the way, what an awesome forum. You all are extremely helpful and I appreciate all you have said. It's intimidating stuff and jargon, just takes a minute or two to let it sink in. Thanks again!
