The above poster is correct. I have Dish also, and an HK AVR230. The question is, though, do you have an HD receiver (satellite reciever)? Does the AVR have HDMI inputs?
Let me go ahead and answer either way.
If you do have an HD receiver, then there will be an HDMI output on the back of the satellite receiver. It may say DIGITAL OUT, as it does on mine. If the AVR has an HDMI Input, then hook it up to that, and then run the HDMI OUT from your receiver to the HDMI IN on the back of the TV. You will have to do two things to get picture and sound. 1. Using the TV remote, select the HDMI source (Input select until the on-screen menu says "HDMI.") 2. using the HK remote, select the HDMI source, then you will have digital picture and sound.
Now, if you do not have HDMI.
There is an optical digital out on the back of your Dish Network Receiver. Plug that into the back of your AVR receiver. I have mine in the "Optical 1 Input." If your Satellite receiver has component outputs (red, green, blue), then go from your component out (the red, green, and blue) from your Dish Receiver, and connect it to the "Component 1" Input on the Harman Kardon. Then go from "Component Out" on the HK to the "Component 1 Input" on your tv. Select Video 1 on the Harman Kardon, and Component 1 on your tv. Now (this is getting complicated, huh?) Go into the OSD button on your HK remote. You'll see "Input setup." Go to the Video 1 input, and where it says "Analogue" (default) you can scroll over with the arrow buttons on your HK remote and select "Optical 1." Now you will have digital sound. --Please note: The sound will be Logic 7 or Dolby Pro-Logic unless there is an HBO program that is broadcast in Dolby Digital. Your receiver will automatically switch to Digital when the signal is available, but the display on your AVR will read at the top "Opt 1."
Now, if you have a regular receiver like I do (I have an HD receiver and a standard def receiver, here I am talking about standard def), then you will have to connect, for the best picture, with S-Video. Here, you will follow the same procedure listed above, but instead of using component cables for the Video 1 connection, you will use S-Video for the Video 1 connection, coming from the Dish Receiver and going into the Video 1 input on the Harman Kardon. Then you will see a "Monitor Out" on the HK, which can be S-Video or regular yellow RCA Plug. You'll want to use another S-Video cable and go from the HK to the S-Video input on the back of the tv. Then, you'll choose S-Video 1 input on the tv remote. The sound will still be the same, so follow the stuff above to get digital sound with an S-Video signal.
I know that was a lot of info, but print this out, follow it step by step according to the inputs and outputs you have, and you'll get it right.
If you need anything else, Private Message me and I'll give you my phone number and I'll talk you through the proper setup so you can have the best picture and sound.
I hope this helps! -LBrize
