Harman Kardon might be on the only brand that has a worse reliability rating than Onkyo, so I would go with Onkyo. Looking at the Harman ebay store, the plurality of their negative feedback is actually defective HK 3490s being sold.

My only experience is with the HK 990, both of the ones I bought from Amazon immediately went into protection mode as soon as I turned them on, so...that was the end of that.

i have an older generation model of the HK. the volume control blue light thingy has gone out. other than that, it's still doing it's job.

Regarding the 3490 we have sold over 175 pcs and only ever had 1 unit returned. And in that instance the customer had driven a nail through a loudspeaker wire causing a short and receiver shutdown..

Just my $0.02... ;)

I've got the HK3390, a very good sounding stereo receiver, slightly less power than the 3490.
