I found myself in Denver last week on business in a snowstorm with a hotel right next to a 24 screen theatre so not wanting to venture to far in unknown terrain I just waltz over to see what was playing. This was the only thing playing that seemed interesting that I hadn't already seen.

I had no idea what this movie was about but I knew that it was supposed to be quirkey Sci-Fi which I usually like ...well until this monstrosity was released!

It was unfunny, uninteresting, poorly acted, and had some of the lamest special effects I've seen in the last 20 years. The special effects were so bad that I was wondering if they made them intentionally bad as a way of being campy. I couldn't tell for sure so either way they failed! what the heck is John Malkavich doing in this piece of crap (albeit just for a brief cameo)?

I later found out that this was a very popular book series among the geek squad. I should have know something was up when the crowd in the theater resembled a Star Trek convention. They were cheering entusiastically throughout most of the film...that's the only thing that kept me awake!

View at your own risk! (Unless you're already a card carrying fan)

Thanks. Now I have an excuse not to go. I've avoided the books so far, now I can avoid the movie. ;)

The books were great. I was hoping the movie would live up to them.

never read the book. Enjoyed the movie. I wasn't expecting an over the top "sci-fi" type of movie. but more of a campy, Monty Python style movie set to a sci-fi libretto.. This was exactly what I got. If you enjoy MP style British humor this movie will hit dead on.

Well I met some buddies at the Wyncoof(?) brewery in downtown and they had some tasty brews. Then tried to go to the Rockies game and it got snowed out! Why don't you guys just cut the chase and move to Alaska!?

Littleton was close to where I was staying...Highlands ranch. I'll give you a "shout-out" next time and you can show me the spots. Hardly fancy pants! Because I had recent knee surgery I'm wearing a leg brace so I was attending all my meetings in Bermuda shorts! Went well with your snow...NOT!

Despite all that...the movie was still the low-lite of my trip!

Yup, that's the WynKoop, across from Union Station. Good beer, nice pool tables upstairs. And about Alaska: one of the benefits of living in/near the mountains is that our weather isn't *boring*. Who'd want all their winter at the same time? This way we get a little summer in January and a touch of snow in July (sometimes August). :)

That's my neck of the woods, on the southwest side of town. Next time you're in, We'll go hoist a pint at 5280; it's a tasty microbrewpub in old town Littleton. We'll get you a chair just for your leg-was it ACL?

Bryan...then there are the Irish pubs...

I learned a while ago not to have much expectation for a Disney treatment of any SciFi title. They seem to reduce even the best story to the lowest common denominator. That said, PBS has just shown the original BBC production of "The Guide" here in Philly. They showed the entire series in one sitting. I'm glad to say I recorded it.

That type of humor is so offbeat I'm still going to see it with high hopes. Lots of people just don't like that style.

read the book.

A. completely understand why it took 20 freakin years to make a movie.

B. don't understand why it didn't take 50.

C. Why was John Malkovic in it ? Punishment for being dumb enough to do Dangerous Liasons.

I've never enjoyed British humour much...and you're talking to a person
who lived in England for nine years and has a British wife! I've watched entire
Monty Python movies and not laughed once. Seems like every British comedy skit I've always seen has to involve a guy dressed in drag or an inept battle scene from a war.

The only British comedian I can say I've ever liked is Benny Hill...he was my idol when I was an adolescent teen!
