hello, not sure if this is the right forum or not to post... I have the denon 685 receiver with primus 360s and have hissing come from the speakers? The treble is 3/4ths the way up and I can't figure out what would cause this? I use the panamax line conditioner and that still doesnt clear it up. What do you think could cause this problem?

Do you have to put your ear up to the speaker to hear the hiss? Is it just hiss or is it buzzing as well? For there to be a little hiss is normal operation. If it is a very loud hiss try taking the Panamax out of the system. Sometimes power conditioners can make things worse than they were without them.

I can hear the hiss 8-10 feet away!

Is this something new? Or, has the hiss been there from the beginning?

What do you mean the treble is 3/4 of the way up? The receiver's tone control is set that high? What happens if it is in the 0 position?

Do you have cable TV somehow connected to the receiver, either the video section or audio?

Is it tape hiss heard during music, or does it hiss when nothing is playing?

I don't have cable tv hooked up to it. Here's my system:

denon 685 receiver
denon 5 cd carousel
panamax 4300 conditioner
audio source eq
primus 360s
ps12 sub

Have you tried taking the Panamax out of the system, remember that using power conditioners doesn't always yeild positive results, sometimes the effect will be negative based on how bad or good your standard wall current is.

Also the equalizer could also cause it, if it has a problem or is a poor design.

seth, it was the eq. the eq is probably 10-12 years old... if I bought a new eq, would I still here the hiss?

A friend of mine has a TEAC EQ and he doesn't have any hiss problems, he says. I wouldn't think a new EQ would cause you any problems. I am glad you to hear you have found the problem.

Did that EQ create the hiss even in the 0 position of the sliders or only when you boosted the high end? Does that speaker have a horn in it? They hiss more.
Perhaps a digital EQ from Behringer? It samples the analog at 24 bits, digital processing then back to analog. Very versatile. Only issue is it has only 12 or 14 bands on it, but you can select any frequency you want.

Panicphan6,

Glad you have a result at the time I read here. Just a bit more (I think it has been asked): Did this problem suddenly start (recently) - meaning, then something has gone wrong. To me this sounds like something traceable - bad component, bad joint, etc. depending on how involved your EQ is. I have had great success with a squirt of cold spray, etc.

If practicable, this might save on the cost of a new item. Twelve years are not that old ....
