A friend of mine back east has one of the new Sony ES receivers, the STR-DA9000ES. This is their top receiver in the new ES line. I really need to find confirmation of this before I pull the trigger for such a big sum of money, but according to him, the receiver has a hidden "adult" DSP surround mode designed for adult movies. As most of you know, most adult DVD titles are either plain stereo (non-Dolby surround encoded) or mono. The DSP mode is said to really open of the sound by anchoring the dialogue in the center channel right where it belongs, the musical scores are sent to the fronts (which he says adds a dynamic punch to all too often washed out warble of the typical "chicka chicka chicka chikca doing doing" music found in these features), and sound effects are vibrantly panned to the surrounds. To activate the mode, the user needs to hold down on the 1, 2, and 3 number buttons AND the power button for 4 to 5 seconds when turning the unit off. Does anyone here have experience with this receiver and/or this hidden mode? I've heard that unless you use pure copper interconnects from your DVD player's analog outs to the DA9000ES the effect is hardly noticeable. My friend is using Silver Audio "Appassionata" pure silver 1 meter RCA's and said the effects are unbelievable, almost as if you are right there in the bedroom. If I'm going to spend upwards of four grand on a new receiver, I'm certainly not going to ruin it by using anything less than at least $400 per pair two channel interconnects. As for video, I'm thinking of going with Ultimate Video cables (component) from Cobalt Cables.
Again, if anyone has experience with this receiver and cable combination I'd sure like to hear your feedback concerning the hidden DSP mode.
Thanks,
