Here is what I have:

LG 42LD550 TV
Yamaha RX-V467 Receiver
External hard drive
WD Live TV Plus

General information:

My TV will play .mkv files from my external hard drive.
My TV will not decode DTS audio.
I do not have a problem using WD Live TV PLus to receiver hdmi in and to tv via hdmi out from receiver.

What I want to do:

I want to do away with the WD Live TV PLus.
I want the TV to play the .mkv files and the receiver to decode the DTS audio.

My understandings:

The only way I can figure out how to do away with the WD unit is to connect my external hard drive to the TV via USB and run an optical cable from TV out to receiver in.

But an optical cable cannot handle DTS HD can it?

OR

I can convert the files to AC3 audio but does the optical cable have the ability to handle AC3 HD?

MY TV does not have an hdmi out.

Please help me figure this out.

Thanks!

Jason

This must be a really dumb question or a really tough one.

I don't think you can do what you want to do, though you will want to consult the manual for your specific TV.

It seems that most TVs are not good about sending out an unmolested digital output via optical from the various inputs. Usually, TVs are designed primarily to be able to output the digital signal received via their tuners, and some even do that wrong, downgrading DD 5.1 to 2 channel. And your receiver does not have a USB input.

Also, if you mean the new lossless audio formats from Dolby and dts used with BD, none of those can pass via optical or coaxial digital connection.

Thanks guys.

Will an optical cable from my TV to receiver carry AC3 5.1? To do away with the WD I can convert the audio from the mkv's to ac3 and use the optical output from TV.

Thanks again.

You need to consult the manual for your TV. Many TVs will not pass a Dolby Digital 5.1 signal that is input via any method other than the TV tuner, and some don't even pass it them.
