WUT?

An external USB hard drive, would have a USB connection on it, not RCA connections on it.

You will need to be far more specific about what it is you are trying to do, because this request didn't make any sense at all to me.

You'd need an external dac to convert the digital information (usb) to analog if you want to use an rca input.

Does the avr have a usb port? If so check the manual for requirements. Probably need to format it with FAT32 as a mass storage device. A thumb drive might be the way to go, too (I use thumb drives on several avrs, I haven't tried an old hard drive on an avr.....I do use an old hard drive out of a laptop with a SATA to USB cable on a bluray player, but that wouldn't work in my avr as it has video files on it).

How is your drive formatted and what size is it? That's usually the determining factor for an avr's usb port to be useful....

It’s 2GB Formated at Fat 32. I have tried NTFS and xfat but nothing works. I hope Yamaha will provide some useful info.

Otherwise, you meet all the other requirements on p. 101? I don't see that FLAC is supoorted (and think I saw another page that says if it has anything not playable it won't play at all? How about your drive's power needs, is there enough juice on the port?

I recently purchased the Yamaha RX-V385 that others say 100Watts per channel or 90Watts.

The truth is that I need to place the knob or numbers in volume at 65% and 70% to listen above medium levels. Loud but gently.

It uses a volume scale based on dB, it's not linear (it's logarithmic) so percentages are meaningless. Consider that each additional 3dB on that dial represents a doubling of power.

Have you tried just a few MP3 songs on a standard thumb drive to see if it works? Have you tried just a few MP3 songs on the hard drive to see if it works? It's not like the Yamaha is some awesome audio server or anything like that. For really solid audio performance, you may look into using an old PC and running software like Plex or something from it so you can get good control, artwork, and a usable interface for audio playback.
