Friends,

Just graduated college, got my first job, and am looking to spend a nice chunk of my signing bonus on a nice system/speakers, and a nice record player. I have always considered myself a trained listener, and I would like to make to jump to an audiophile worthy setup.

Any advice would help greatly!

So budget for me will be in the realms of 2.5-4k? Does that seem reasonable?

I have a bunch of old thelonious/miles/coltrane vinyls that need to get some recognition, so hopefully i'll be able to piece together something!

I'm currently in the market for a ~900 sq. ft loft in downtown houston, and will have the system in my "living room", but hopefully I can get a setup that lets sound nicely travel through the whole space, without being too overbearing.

I guess this really came out through my passion for playing music, and my love for jazz. I grew up studying piano, and quickly became obsessed with the great jazz pianists, and I remember as a child going to my friends dads house, who had an amazing b&w system, and hearing some really old jazz records, and falling in love.

Now that I can (hopefully) afford it, I'd like to have something like that of my own!

If not, then we can go for the full shabang, but after reading these forums, it seems like I should spend some money on a pair of speakers and then build the rest of my setup around what I want after being with just two for a while.

They key is to get the overall best sound, in your living room - for when
you sit down and do critical listening > 2.1 is a good way to begin.

Since you are in the market for a new place - this is the time for you to
find ways to audition speakers, since you seem to have a critical ear for
music. As far as how much you should spend, it is your money. Also, the
money will not quarantee overall sound quality.

You may want to hold off on the sub for a bit. Sometimes a sub can cause problems with the neighbors. Look for a nice phono stage for your vinyl. Just a thought.
