I am looking for help setting up my second zone. I have a new Denon 2807 which has zone 2 capablity. I alos have a 4-5 year old Sony STR- DA3ES. The receiver is in mint condion and works fine. The only reason i bought a new one is i have upgraded my home theatre ( Hitaachi 55" Plasma, Definitive Mythos 2 &3 and Gems), and needed HDMI and some other capabilites. I want to put ithe Sony to good use and not use it as a boat anchor. Doese it make sense to use this reciever as a "pre-amp" to power zone 2?? The Denon already has a zone 2 amp. I am looking forward to any input or connection help that will help me utilize this comonet.

Thanks
rob

Not a bad idea. That will take come load off of your Denon. Hook up Zone 2 analog out from your 2807 to any analog input on the Sony. Sety your Zone Preout volume as fixed in the Denon and use the sony remote control volume. Ofd you can fix the sony volume and control Zone 2 volume from the Denon.

Good to hear this will make a difference. Because the Denon has a zone 2 amp i was not sure. Where will i see a difference in the reduced Denon Load??

With no loads on the 6&7th channels on the Denon I'm sure it would give you a little mor headroom (I have no research to back this up but in theory it makes sense) The power draw for the amplifier section on the Denon should drop lower. Whether or not this will make a difference...hard to say. What you can do is take channels 6&7 and bi amp your fronts (If they are bi-amplable). That would be a really good use.

Using the power amp assignment menu in the 2807 you are able to assign the surround back left and right channels to act as bi-amp channels for your front left and right. This will double your power for your front left and right channels. To do this you would run a set of speakers wires from your front channels and from surround channels to seperate binder posts on your speakers. However I don't think Mythos have Bi-amp terminals...I may be wrong though.

Just to clarify, you are running a 5.1 setup and not a 7.1 correct?

stereo only?

I am also trying to setup my 2nd zone with the 2807 and can only get it to play from the AM/FM source? I saw a note in the manual about no digital playback. Does this mean I cannot listen to cd's, dvd, tv, etc in zone 2? thanks for the help.

No, it just means that you have to have analog connections to the receiver in addition to digital connections. The receiver does not have an additional set of DACS to convert digital inputs to analog for zone 2 so it must arrive in analog format in the first place.
