ok I hope I'm posting this in the proper forum. I joined hopefully to get an educated guess with this.Ok so i bought a used atpl120 it did not come with a cartridge just a headshell. Anyway I bought 2 different cartridges one for regular record playing and another for playing 78s. I bought another headshell to use for the 78 cartridge hooked it all up and it played great well then I went and tried the other cartridge hooked it up to the headshell that came with the turntable and got no sound other than hearing the music from the surface of the record. I initially thought maybe the lead wires on the headshell were bad so I went and bought a brand new one and hooked it up and the same thing happened. I know it's not anything to do with something hooked up wrong otherwise the other cartridge wouldn't work. Defective cartridge perhaps ? Any input you guys give would be greatly appreciated!

Your logic seems correct to me. According to their website: "This professional stereo turntable features a high-torque direct-drive motor for quick start-ups and a selectable internal stereo phono pre-amplifier that allows the turntable to plug directly to computers and other components with no dedicated turntable input."

See if you can find a way to check the non-78 cartridge on a different setup. Or it's back to the seller now for a warranty claim.

thank you kindly for the response Jim. I've contacted the guy I bought it from and let him know about it, waiting to see what he has to say about it. In the meantime I was debating on going through the trouble of taking off the 78 cartridge and putting this one on that headshell since I know that one works and see what happens. Again thanks for the response !
