help with speakers, subwoofer

Hey Guys,

Here is my problem, I'm sort of re-setting up my HT today because I just got my new sub (axiom ep500) and some new speaker stands. My system is run through Yamaha rx-v557, Klispch RB 35 mains, RC 35 center, and SB-2 rears. So here is the problem. For some reason, when i have the reciever on any volume except for mute, my speakers are emmitting this insanely annoying low humming sound which is driving me up a wall. I thought it might be the sub interfering because that was the only new element to my system, but the humming continues with the sub disconnected. Any clue as to what might be causing this? I know if wasnt there before today because I surely would have noticed it. Also, I cannot seem to figure out the base management settings for my receiver. If i set my EP500 to anything but 40 hz crossover (so 60,80,100, and bypass) it too just has a constant hum (a problem which is noted in the manual, they say unscrew the chassis ground screw but that doesnt seem to do anything except make the sub volume lower).

Any help would be greatly appreciated this is driving me nuts

Thanks guys

Do you still get the hum from your speakers when you physically unplug the sub from the outlet?

Try a little experiment. Get a three prong adaptor and float the ground on the Axiom power cord. Plug it in the wall (now with two prongs). If it eliminates the hum, you had a 60Hz hum, which means your outlets are on the same circuit.

So unhooking the RCA from the sub to the receiver won't do it. You need to unplug it from the wall and float the ground. Finding an outlet on a different circuit should solve the problem. If not, report back.

ok, the sub was plugged into a surge protector strip, so I unhooked that and plugged it into its own socket (the second socket below the one where the surge strip is plugged into), but the problem has persisted, at least with the subs 60hz hum, the speakers seem to be better, what now?

thanks

Now try the three prong adaptor - check the garage or basement. ;) I use one on my shopvac extension cord. I'd also recommend plugging it in to a totally different outlet.

Do you have any dimmer switches in the room that control lighting/fans?
