I am finishing my basement, the main room is 50 feet long 9 foot ceilings. I will put the tv on one end and want to do a 7 channel system. I am thinking in wall speakers two on each side of the tv (yellow) and one center below it. a sub in the bottom right corner. my question is should I do two sets of ceiling speakers (green), or do one set of ceiling speakers and then another set of in wall speakers in the back of the room (burgundy) see image below.

the main purpose of the speakers will be for playing audio from the TV or just listing to music for enjoyment. i plan on getting his receiver from costco
Denon AVR-S750H 7.2-Channel 4K AV Receiver
I haven't settled on the brand of in-wall/ceiling speakers to get yet probably polk.

thanks for the advise.

JMO but I don't think either one of those scenarios would work.

i don't understand. Both will produce sound so it will work. Are you saying that isn't the best setup for watching movies and I should bring the left and right surround sound closer to the seating area near the tv and also move the rear surround sound closer as well like into the middle of the room as ceiling speakers?

Yes those speaker placements will produce sound but that's all they will produce is noise. The speakers are not strategically placed for good home theater experience.

I know everyone is anti in wall speakers. but we really want to have the best setup while still using them. is there a way you would recommend doing in-wall speakers in this size of a room?

IMO I would only use half that space for H/T

In-walls can work well enough if you use good speakers and think about placement and where you'll be doing your listening from. However, seems you're trying to spread sound throughout the very large room rather than address stereo/surround imaging particularly in particular listening positions. Just what are the goals here?

I guess a little of both, I want to have surround sound for the tv area (right side) (at least 5.1), but I would also like to fill the room with sound when listing to music. would just loading up all the speakers on the right side work best for surround sound while watching tv? i guess that would probably work for filling the room with sound for music.

I'm like in the left side of the room myself without that large opening. Also looks like it might be easy to put side surrounds if that's a Stairway To the left you can mount one in the wall there and mount one on the wall in the other side if you doing all in walls

Now keep in mind a room that size is going to need some major Subwooferage

I wouldn't recommend in-wall either. Much depends on your listening spot. Assuming your chair or couch is at 15-20 ft. I would put 1 speaker each in wall to the left and right of your sitting position. I would put 2 celling speakers about 2.5 feet behind and about 8 feet apart from each other with both angled towards your listening area. If you want to listen to music I would stick with 2 channels. This would sound best for movies. BUT, as I do in my porch I have my surrounds way in the back. You could use a 7.1 and utilize the rear 50 ft away in-wall speakers for fun when you want- just switch your receiver setting from 5.1 to 7.1 for full basement sound. Adjust the back speaker volume to reach where you want to be.

Probably have to set it up manually, probably drive most avrs' auto setup routines nuts trying to reconcile speakers 50 feet apart from each other :), let alone work well. Still really wouldn't be proper 7.1 experience IMO. I'd concentrate speakers around the primary listening area. Maybe put a zone 2 pair of speakers at the other end of the room for parties where you can just play both zones simultaneously in a party mode.
