Help with sound on Rear Projection HDTV

I have a HDTV that is about 2-3 years old. It is a Aspect 53 inch Widescreen HDTV.

I dont currently have any surround sound speakers up because I am saving for a new receiver that has HD jacks and my living room is tiny anyways.

Normally the sound is nice on the built in speakers, but somtimes the actual dialouge of the actors is really really low, while the action and other things is really loud. I turn down the volume when it gets loud but then cant hear them when they speak. I watched The Dark Knight last night and could barely hear Batman when he spoke unless I kept turning it up and down.

Am I doing somthing wrong? Is here a seperate audio setting I need to change?

I do have a large center speaker and 2 smaller surround speakers and a older A/V receiver, but it doesn't have HD jacks so I dont use it. So its just connected from the DVD player to TV by Componant HD cables.

Its not doing this all the time. I am watching TV right now and it sounds ok with the voices. Not sure if its just DVDs or not.

Welcome to the forum!

Two things that I'd like to start with:
  1. It could definitely be the way that the DVD player is set up to deal with surround sound movie tracks that are output through the analog audio outputs (I'm assuming that's what you are using to connect it to the TV). My parents had that issue with their DVD player a few years ago.
  2. My parents and I watched the Dark Knight on my full surround sound system, and we had a lot of trouble hearing the dialogue without having the other sounds (music, explosions) be very loud - especially at the beginning of the movie.

Some questions:
  1. Which DVD player are you using?
  2. How do you have the audio connected to the TV?
  3. Do you have this issue with other DVDs, or just the Dark Knight?
  4. Have you tried using the dynamic range [STRIKE]control[/STRIKE] compression on the DVD player?

Thanks.

Gotcha, but what are you using for the audio connection? Is it the analog audio outputs (the two RCA jacks) or the optical audio output? I suspect that it's the analog outputs, but I don't know if your TV can accept an optical input (most can't).

Here are some notes for you from the DVD player's owner's manual:

  • “D.MIX” on the display indicates that a multi-channel soundtrack can be down-mixed to two channels.
So, if you are watching something that doesn't show that, it could be that the player can't properly convert the multi-channel soundtrack into a stereo output for your TV.

Page 11 discusses the Audio menu, which has some nice options for you including:
  • Advanced Surround
  • Dialogue Enhancer (this might be an excellent choice for you)
  • Multi Remaster (probably not that helpful)
  • Attenuator (perhaps helpful)
