Have you used the receiver's test tones to calibrate each channel to an equal level? That's the first thing you need to do.

To balance the speakers accurately, you should pick up a Radio Shack SPL meter.

What mode are you using when listening to music?

The front speakers sound great through the carver but I can barely hear the rear speakers and the center speaker when I have them all on when listening to music.
I can't hear my center and surrounds either, but I listen to them in the two channel stereo mode. ...and I like it that way. IMNSHO, two channel recordings sound best played back in two channels but YMMV.

Try one of the DPS modes, DPL, or even 5 channel stereo if it's available.

Hi,

The receiver came with a mike of some kind that the installer used to set tone. He also set something to large vs small on the on screen set-up for speakers.
The auto-setup feature will almost always set your front speakers to Large and 99% of the time that is wrong. You will have to familiarize yourself with the setup functions of the receiver. If you have a subwoofer, you want all speakers set to Small, Sub=Yes/On, and Xover=80 Hz.
