Help with "pre-outs"

Hi, I am setting up my Onkyo 1010 and ran the front L/R channels and the center from the receiver to an amp. When I go into system setup to adjust speakers, those speakers cannot be selected. Doesn't the receiver know that they are run from pre-outs versus the conventional speaker terminals? HELP.............. Thanks

All I can find in the menu that could point us in the correct direction is on page 64.

• Preout to External Amplifier is not available in either of the following cases:
– The Speakers Type(Front) setting is set to Bi-Amp or "Digital Crossover”.
– The Powered Zone 2 setting is set to “Yes”.
