Hi everyone!

I´ve just tried to add a 2 ch stereo amp to my Denon 3805.

I connected the pre amp out (2 ch amp) to the zone 2 LR preouts on the back of the Denon.
The Speakers were connected not by the normal fronts LR but by the connections at the very right hand side (looking at the back of the machine), called surround back zone 2/zone 3.

A few times I nearly died it was sooooo loud, the other times nothing came out of the speakers at all.

The sad thing is I dont know what I did differently each time!!!
Maybe assigning 0 db or 40 !!!Dont know, cant experiment again cos the neighbours will have me evicted!!

Could/would some kind person please tell me "in baby steps" how to wire these two machines together using the denon´s pre amp section.

Thanks very much,
maynardo

It's not clear from your post if you moved the speakers from the 3805 Surround back / Zone 2 terminals to the stereo amplifier. If you did, the problem probably is that the Zone 2 L/R pre outs typically only "see" analog connections. This means if you only have digital audio connections between your source components and the 3805 (optical, HDMI, etc.), you'll now have to go back and add analog connections (i.e. the red/white RCA's).

If I understand it you have a separate power amp from your Denon AVR.

(1) Connect the preouts from the Denon to the input of the power amp.
Use RCA type interconnects , one for left chanel and one for right channel

(2) Connect the speakers to output of the power amp ( not the Denon)

============

If you are using Zone 2, then you will have to activate Zone2 to hear output on the speakers connected to the power amp. If you do not activate zone2 then it acts like the rear presence ouputs and you will only hear sounds on the power amp if a signal is being directed to the rear presence channels.

Good luck!

Leave the power amp off when you set up Zone 2. You have to either assign Zone 2 to the internal amp or line out, then you need to determine the level at either -0dB or -40dB because the line out isn't continuously variable, unlike the Zone 2 speaker output. The reason for this is when using a volume control for each speaker in other areas, the Zone 2 volume won't be changed to a level that's too low and then someone turns up the volume controls on the walls and when the receiver is turned on again, it will want to turn the speakers inside out.

Go to Pg 45-46 of the manual. Also, read Pg 69-71.

+1 ^^^^ What amp are you using? Start with the output level @ -40dB. That's how mine is setup with volume controls using a Carver amp. See signature.
